BUT, the Tozo app really salvages the situation and makes this a really nice sounding speaker if you're able to use it. The Tozo app comes 16 premade EQ settings with the ability for you to create custom/new settings.
The issue with this speaker (with no EQ) is it's too midrange forward with not enough bass or treble. So as a result it sounds dull and flat, overall unexciting. Just like on old stereos that have a loudness button, what this speaker needs is a boost to BOTH bass and treble, which isn't a built-in EQ option in the speaker itself. The Tozo app really enables the speaker to shine and sound quite good. I'm not sure why the speaker wasn't EQ'd to boost bass and treble by default, but at least you have the capability to do so with the app.
Because it's midrange forward by default, you want to use the modes that take midrange down and have variations of bass/treble boost. The settings I found to work best are Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Classical. Rock works the best for me if I had to use one preset mode all the time, but the others have their place as well.
But Rock arguably take things a little too far as far as reducing midrange, so I created a Mod Rock ("modified" rock) setting that still boosts bass and treble, but doesn't take midrange down quite as much. This works best for me.
The pictures I've included show the Tozo app indicating the PA1 is connected using the Standard setting (note the flat line across the frequency spectrum), and I have three other pictures showing the Rock setting (note the bass and treble boost and midrange below the centerline), the R&B setting (which boosts bass and treble even more), and my Mod Rock setting (which is similar to Rock, but doesn't take midrange down quite as much).
So in order of degree of treble/bass boost, Mod Rock is the least extreme, Rock in the middle, and R&B having the most treble/bass boost. Jazz for whatever reason boosts the mid-bass (but not the lower bass) and boosts the treble more but not the highest treble frequencies. Classical boosts treble more than bass. There's also a Hip-Pop that might be useful for more brightly mastered music since it takes down the mid-treble frequencies.
So in summary, if you can use the Tozo app, this is a nice speaker worthy of being recommended. If, for whatever reason, you're not able to use the Tozo app, there are probably better sounding options out there for the price.

I mainly listen to spoken podcasts as opposed to music, so I can’t comment on the musical quality, but the audio of people talking is rich and robust and very smooth without any background noise or interference. It feels like someone speaking in front of an auditorium in the power of the vocal chords out of the device. This is an appreciable uptick in quality compared to listening directly from a smartphone even at low volume.
I am not a technophile, but it basically paired on its own with my iPhone and immediately transmitted whatever I was playing on the phone to the external speaker. I don’t foresee anyone experiencing any technical difficulties setting it up. The other buttons are intuitive with symbols and will be easy for anyone to use even people like me who are new to speaker products. Charging the speaker is also as simple as hooking up your iPhone to recharge it, so this should not be a source of concern.
I would consider getting a second speaker to synchronize them at different parts of the house in order to achieve the stereo effect, but for now I am content with having one speaker for when I have work to do and need a distraction.
I am impressed that there is a separate button to press which turns off the speaker when you need to take a call on the phone as well as giving you the option to reject the call and continue listening to the speaker. This is actually quite important to avoid becoming flustered while trying to take an important call while loud music continues to play.
The three equalizer modes are fairly rudimentary and are difficult for my untrained ear to tell the difference, but an audiophile may appreciate the nuances when listening to more sophisticated music.
The volume is definitely strong which is very important for me because I have slightly impaired hearing and often find it important to maximize the volume of my laptop to hear properly. I do not anticipate needing to max out the volume on the speakers because the limit is beyond even my needs.
The subdued black tone and flat oval shape is a look that complements the surroundings and fades into the background in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing.
The speaker comes affixed with a sturdy strap that can useful to loop around a backpack on a hike or bike handlebars while riding.
Overall this is an aesthetically pleasing speaker sturdily built and fulfills the goal of transmitting audio with strong and clear resolution for a reasonable price.
