These shrunk enough after washing/drying that I had to order the next larger size. My husband usually wears a Large but I had ordered XLarge just in case. The XLarge shrunk so now am ordering an XXLarge as they are otherwise well made.

I've been multisport jock; I wore them in the Army; I've wore them in college; I wore them when I worked in construction; I wore them as a 4-season backpacker, skier, and mountaineer; I wore them when I worked in IT; I'm wearing them in my retirement. I would prefer the size 3x. I perceive the size to buy depends on how snug the wearer wants his briefs.
4x would be fairly loose for a 52" waist. My recent ones did not shrink.
